GRADUATION DESIGN PORTFOLIO

SERVICE DESIGN:

LIVING TO 100

This was a 7-week project based around the fact that one-third of babies born in 2013 are expected to live to 100 (ONS, 2016). The challenge here was to identify a new service opportunity at some point on the life timeline. This could be a service to be implemented in 100 years time or a service which if implemented now could potentially aid future generations.

I identified the issue of recycling and waste management; I wanted to design a service that encouraged more people to recycle more frequently and correctly. My service was aimed at university students living an on-the-go lifestyle and comprised of a reverse vending machine which would offer a monetary incentive for returned food packaging and sort the different materials by barcode. A big aspect of this service is its educational value, as users and passersby become more aware of the environmental impact that packaging has and in particular the effect their purchases have and how to minimise that.
